The System of Checks and Balances
When the framers of the Constitution separated the government into three branches, they created the system of checks and balances. According to the 8th grade U.S. History Textbook, the system of checks and balances "...keeps any branch of government from becoming too powerful" (129). The system of checks and balances gives each branch of the government the authority and responsibility to keep the other two branches in check. For example, if the congress passes an act that the president does not agree with, he can veto it. This makes the government less efficient, but prevents it from becoming too powerful.
